Feeling overwhelmed is not a sign that there is too much happening. It is a sign that the nervous system’s current capacity is smaller than the demands being placed on it. This moves the problem from the external (too much) to the internal (too little capacity) — and the internal is workable.
Chronic overwhelm is often the first clear sign that the nervous system has been running in a sustained state of activation and has never fully recovered. The cup is already full — so even small additions tip it over.
Capacity for life is determined largely by the nervous system’s regulatory range. A narrow range means the window of tolerance is small, and ordinary life constantly pushes past its edges. Read more about the nervous system →
Research on allostatic load shows that sustained exposure to stressors without adequate recovery narrows the nervous system’s regulatory range and increases vulnerability to both mental and physical health problems.[1]
Interventions that directly address nervous system capacity — including somatic practices, breathwork, and mindfulness-based approaches — have been shown to produce significant improvements in stress tolerance and emotional regulation.[2]
“Overwhelm is not weakness. It is the honest signal of a system that has been giving more than it has been receiving. The answer is not to manage better. It is to build more capacity.”

Building capacity involves: breathwork practices that discharge accumulated activation; somatic movement that teaches the body it can return to regulation; emotional processing that reduces the charge in unprocessed experiences; and genuine rest — the kind of restoration that actually replenishes.
